You know how midwives catch babies? At MAYA, we like to say that we catch moms. And I’m seeing moms catching everyone around them. They’re dropping off food, sharing seeds, making masks… all while caring for babies, home-schooling, and getting everything else done, often in isolation. Add to this being pregnant, worrying about what childbirth will be like during a pandemic, and experiencing the most intense part of their life (yes, postpartum) amidst so much uncertainty.
Moms are doing so much, and they need our support now more than ever.
Here’s what one mom had to say about the support she received at MAYA:
“I highly recommend participating in the classes and support groups. The instruction and support that I received from the staff was life-changing. I was frustrated and overwhelmed with my experience as a mother. Thankfully, I found MAYA Organization and received a listening ear and support. Also, the doula services were exceptional. I was highly impressed with the level of support this group offers.” — N.R.
And we need your support.
Last fall, MAYA experienced a disruption in funding that forced us to suspend our services for four months. During that time, moms never stopped calling us. They were looking for a doula to be by their side during labor, for prenatal classes, postpartum support groups, breastfeeding support, diapers or car seats. And we couldn’t help. Nevertheless, our staff kept coming by, volunteering their time and brainstorming ways to serve Pittsburgh moms once again. And to be honest, we really missed everybody!
We were overjoyed when we were able to re-open at the end of February, and then… well, you know what happened next. We have quickly adjusted all of our services in order to observe social distancing and keep our communities safe. We now offer several Zoom classes each week, provide phone support, and have learned to “doula at a distance” over the phone or Zoom. We are bringing diapers out to people’s cars on Tuesdays and Fridays. (Can I share that how much love I feel, thinking about the honest, vulnerable, and compassionate conversations that moms have been sharing with one another during our Zoom classes lately.)
As we adjust to these new circumstances we are asking for YOUR support to ensure that we keep catching moms for years to come.
We are very excited about new programs we are developing, such as the Community Internship Program that is starting this week. We are training a group of moms that have participated in our programs to become prenatal educators and doulas. They are going to make such a difference in their communities!
