Why are diapers such a big need?
Every day, we see parents come through our doors, struggling to provide diapers for their children. The need is huge. The MAYA Organization can easily get diapers out to those who need them most; we just need diapers, and a lot of them!
The average infant goes through 10-12 diaper changes a day; over the course of a month, this adds up to over 300 diapers.
It can cost $100 a month or more to keep one infant in clean diapers. For a family on a limited income, after rent, food and other bills, there is often not enough left for diapers. Food pantries don’t typically have or provide diapers, and few community resources are available or able to keep up with the increase in requests for diapers.
How can you help?
Host a Drive: There are many ways to run a diaper drive. Be creative, and have fun!
- Have a dance, car wash or other event and ask guests to bring a pack of diapers as “payment”
- Host a drop off station at your business or church, and promote it. Create flyers and posters, talk about it on facebook, network with friends and neighbors
- Use your imagination!
Diapers can be dropped off at our Office at 512 Foreland Street, Pittsburgh, Pa 15212 from 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., or we can arrange to pick up diapers if need be.
What can we accept?
Diapers and pull ups of any brand or size. Open packages are just fine, so we can take those leftovers when a child has grown out of a size. Wipes are also welcome. We are also collecting new carseats, and new and gently used clothing and pack-n-plays.
Cash donations can make an even bigger difference! We pool all donations and are able to buy diapers in bulk, at great savings.
We accept cash and checks made out to Maya Organization, or make a secure donation online. Click “donate now” and be sure to add a note that your donation is for diapers.
